HIGHLIGHTS OF BORROWER'S POLICY

WHO MAY BORROW?

Borrowing privileges are free to Scarborough residents, taxpayers, students attending Scarborough schools,and to employees of Scarborough businesses. Non-residents may borrow upon payment of a $60.00 annual fee.

A library card is required to check out materials.
You must register in person.
You must provide a valid ID with your current Maine mailing address: i.e. Maine drivers license, checkbook, car registration, Maine ID card, hunting or fishing license, etc. A borrower's card is issued upon confirmation of residence, property address, place of employment, or school attendance.
You must sign a legal agreement to comply with the rules and regulations of the library. NOTE: Completion of the application requires an alternate phone number in addition to the home number.

Children birth through age 14 years are issued a children's library card. Youth who are 15 and older are issued an adult library card. Youth who are 17 and older are issued an adult computer user's card.

Parents or legal guardians of children twelve and under will be notified by mail that their child has registered for a library card if the child is unaccompanied at the time of registration.

ARE MY BORROWER'S RECORDS PRIVATE?

The Library is committed to safeguarding all borrowers' records, including those of children, to the extent allowed by local, state, and federal law. Maine State law requires all library records to be confidential. Since juvenile patron records are not specifically exempted in this statute, the library trustees interpret the law to apply to all patron records without exception.


HOW LONG MAY I KEEP AN ITEM?
  • Books - 3 weeks and one 3 week renewal if book is not requested by another borrower
  • New Adult Fiction and Nonfiction - 21 days with no renewal
  • CD's, Audio Tapes, and Magazines - 3 weeks.
  • Entertainment and Instructional Video Tapes and DVD's- 7 days.
  • Large Type - 3 weeks.
  • Interlibrary Loan - lending period is determined by lending library.

CAN I RETURN ITEMS AFTER HOURS?

Unless it is otherwise stated on the cover, items may be placed in the book return located in the front of the building. Items otherwise marked as too fragile or too large for the book return must be returned when the Library is open. If you cannot make it to the Library, you may mail the items back at your own cost. HOW DO I RENEW OR RESERVE ITEMS?

Renewals and reserves are available to you 24/7. You must be logged in to the Minerva catalog and to your patron record to renew your materials or place a reserve. You will need your Library card 14 digit barcode number to access your account. If you do not have online access, you may call the Library during business hours and we will be glad to renew your items for you. (883-4723 ~ select Lending Services #2)

When you submit your patron information, the following services are available:

View status of interlibrary loan (ILL) materials
Request interlibrary loan (ILL) materials.

RESERVES

Reserve materials requests are processed automatically when placed through our online catalog. Online reserves of materials and requests for Interlibrary loans are also made through our online catalog. You will need your Library card's 14 digit barcode number to reserve (request) items. If you do not have online access, you may call the Library during business hours and we will be glad to reserve items for you. (883-4723 ~ select Reference and Adult Services #4))

FEES

FINES: View your status online 24/7 https://minerva.maine.edu:443/patroninfo~S91. Fines are $.25 a day, accumulating to $10 per item.When your total unpaid fees accumulate to $5.00 or more, you must bring the balance owed to below $5.00 to continuing placing reserves and borrowing items. Fines on materials owned by another library are set by the lending library and are collected from the borrower by the Scarborough Library.

WHAT IF I LOSE OR ACCIDENTALLY DAMAGE MATERIALS?
The cardholder must pay for the item. The library does not accept replacement copies for lost or damaged books. The Library will bill you for overdue, lost, or damaged items. If you ignore the notices, borrowing privileges are suspended until are past due fees are paid.

HOW SHOULD I PAY MY FEES OR FINES?
The Library accepts credit cards. You can pay your accumulated fees in person, call us with your credit card information, or mail a check.

SANDY BOOKS: $2 to replace cover.
AUDIO BOOK OR VIDEO CASE DAMAGE: Cost of case.

DO YOU DENY BORROWING PRIVILEGES OR LIBRARY USE?

Use of the library may be denied for loss or theft of books or other materials, destruction of library property, and/or objectionable conduct while in the Library.

WHAT SERVICES ARE OFFERED TO THE HOMEBOUND?

We provide home delivery of materials twice a month to Scarborough residents who are unable to leave their homes. This service is also provided to residents living in residential or nursing care facilities. Materials such as large print or regular print books and books on CD or tape on any subject requested are delivered by volunteers twice a month. For those who have difficulty seeing the printed word, the Library also has information about Library Services for People with Disabilities administered by the Maine State Library for the Library of Congress.
