Arrow Library launches a new “Armchair Traveler” series: Monarchs from Maine to Mexico
Wednesday, August 11 6:30 pm

Harry Pringle will offer a breathtaking presentation of digital photographs chronicling his journey from Maine, to Cape May, NJ, to Mexico to follow the migration of one of nature’s most amazing species: the monarch butterfly.

Pringle developed an interest in monarchs after observing them in the garden of his summer home on Little Diamond Island. “The monarchs seemed different from other butterflies,” Pringle says. “They were strong fliers with a sense of purpose. We planted milkweed in the garden, saw a pupa hatch, then watched as monarchs seemed to mass in our garden in late September in preparation for their migration south.”

Pringle says the book Four Wings and a Prayer by Sue Halpern inspired him to plan a trip to Cape May, NJ. “I learned that the monarchs funnel through Cape May in great numbers on their way south. I planned a trip to see Monarchs in clusterthe migration, and actually learned how to tag monarchs as well.”

Pringle clarifies that his knowledge of monarchs is not scientific, but acknowledges an affinity for the seemingly delicate yet determined species. “I find myself looking forward to seeing the first monarchs in our garden each summer – usually sometime in July.”

This program is free and open to the public. Copies of Four Wings and a Prayer by Sue Halpern are available for loan through the Scarborough Public Library’s online catalog. Visit the PBS NOVA website The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies for more information about the monarch life cycle and to watch the NOVA program online.
